Osteopathy for pregnancy

English speaking osteopath for pregnancy Nice – Roquefort les Pins

Osteopathy offers a safe and effective manual treatment and can alleviate many of the typical muscular and myofascial stresses of pregnancy, without the use of drugs and in addition to your standard obstetric care.

A woman’s body undergoes physiological, biomechanical and emotional changes during pregnancy.  The body goes through both structural and hormonal changes, your posture will adapt to your growing baby and your centre of gravity will be shifted toward the front.  Hormonal changes cause ligaments all over the body to soften and stretch to prepare the mother’s body with immense elasticity to adapt around the developing baby and to allow optimum passage of the baby through the birth canal.  This can lead to additional pressure on the joints in various parts of the body, including the spine and pelvis.

It is estimated that during pregnancy up to two thirds of women may experience varying degrees of back pain.  General common conditions that may arise from pregnancy changes are:  general aches and pains, low back pain, mid-back pain and neck pain, sciatica from pressure on the sciatic nerve, rib pain and difficulty of breathing,  symphysis pubic dysfunction, sacroiliac joint pain, coccyx pain, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, nausea, heartburn, and increased stress.

Osteopathy may help relieve the stresses and strains on your body during pregnancy and after birth.  Osteopaths play an important role in helping the expectant mother understand these conditions, treating them when appropriate, and advice on strategies to keep comfortable and healthy during this important stage in one’s life.

The osteopathic treatment will help your body to be correctly prepared and managed before, during and after pregnancy.

The osteopaths at Osteo-Centre have a post-graduate specialization for treating pregnancy related conditions.

Preparing for pregnancy

Osteopathy can play an important role in helping you prepare for pregnancy.  Osteopathic treatment aims at improving the mobility of the spine and joints, breathing mechanics and posture.  Emphasis will be placed to ensure best structural and visceral mobility of the lower abdomen and pelvic bowl and ensure optimum blood flow and drainage to and from the area, allowing the embryo to settle in the best conditions in the lining of the uterus.  Advice on strategies to keep comfortable and healthy during this important stage in one’s life is also part of the osteopathic consultation.

During pregnancy – Antenatal care

Osteopathy can be helpful throughout all stages of pregnancy.   Gentle, specific and non-pharmaceutical osteopathic techniques can help your body adjust to the physical, physiological and emotional changes of pregnancy.  The first trimester of pregnancy (up to 12 weeks) carries a naturally high risk of miscarriage. Most miscarriages happen during the first trimester of pregnancy; they can occur for many causes but most of these are due to chromosomal abnormality.  Osteopathic treatment cannot prevent these abnormalities.   Osteopaths take great care when treating pregnant women and adapt their treatments appropriately.  Manipulation of the lumbar spine is avoided until about 14 weeks gestation but other gently and non-manipulative techniques are used.

Obstetric osteopathy treatment aims to:

  • relieve pain in the low back, mid-back, neck, pelvis, sacroiliac, coccyx and hips
  • help the body to accommodate for the postural changes
  • help prepare the body for delivery

After pregnancy – Postnatal care

In the months following birth, osteopathy can be used to:

  • alleviate pain and discomfort due to the effects of pregnancy and labour
  • relieve aches and pains associated with carrying the baby and breastfeeding posture

Post pregnancy osteopathic consultation includes information about strengthening exercises for your pelvic floor and for your abdominal stabilizing muscles.

When to consult

It is recommended to consult an osteopath as soon as symptoms appear.

It is also advisable to have an osteopathic pregnancy assessment to assure a good mobility of the pelvis, pubis, back and the associated ligaments and myofascial structures.  Three are advisable: at the 5th month, 7th month and beginning of 9th month.
